With the arrival of moisture, higher humidity and winter weather conditions, effective Thursday, December 5, 2019 CAL FIRE lifted the burn permit suspension that has been in place in Placer and El Dorado counties during fire season. Following CAL FIRE’s lifting of fire restrictions, which indicates the end of our local fire season, the Fire Chief has lifted local fire restrictions for North Tahoe Fire and Meeks Bay Fire Protection Districts.

The hard work of homeowners in the Alpine Meadows Community was recognized this month with the National Fire Protection Association’s designation as a Firewise USA® community. The Alpine Meadows Fire Safe Council coordinated with North Tahoe Fire and the Placer County Fire Safe Alliance to complete a rigorous set of criteria required to participate in the national program. Stakeholders completed a community wildfire hazard assessment, and developed an action plan to guide their efforts to reduce the risk of wildfire in their community.

On June 17, 2019 CAL FIRE suspended residential burn permits in the Tahoe Basin. Today, June 26th marked the first day of the year categorized as “High Fire Danger” in the Basin, prompting North Tahoe Fire Protection District (NTFPD) and Meeks Bay Fire Protection District (MBFPD) to impose fire restrictions by suspending all recreational campfires and open burning. The suspension takes effect today and will remain in effect through the fire season..

The Sac Bee released the McClatchy Analysis to put a spotlight on policy issues to encourage conversations in the halls of the state Capitol about policy supporting defensible space and safer building standards. The series highlights areas of concern, actions to be taken, and risks to be aware of using data provided by Cal Fire. What today’s Associated Press release did not address was the rest of the conversation from our interview. The article is a call to action, using the Camp Fire as the wakeup call for California. The story failed to tell that the Tahoe Basin had our wakeup call in 2007 after the 2007 Angora Fire. It missed the opportunity to share the successes that the Basin has experienced as a result of the collaboration, policy changes, code enhancements, and other efforts that were borne of Angora’s devastation, and should serve as a road map for the rest of the state.

The North Tahoe Fire Protection District (NTFPD) and the Contractors Association of Truckee Tahoe (CATT) announce they will co-host a public workshop in January designed to help building industry professionals understand proposed changes affecting the 2019 building season.

Builders, planners, designers, consultants, real estate agents, and others involved in land use and construction should attend this public workshop co-hosted by NTFPD and CATT on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2019, at 4 p.m. The workshop will be held at NTFPD Station 51, 222 Fairway Drive, Tahoe City. Light refreshments will be served.

Are you looking for ways to help make your community safer through charitable contributions? Did you know that 100% of funds donated to the North Tahoe Fire Partnership Fund go toward marine and land-based fire and rescue apparatus dedicated to our Fire District?

Getting Started: North Tahoe Fire has raised half the funding necessary to purchase its first Fire and Rescue Boat. In 2015, the District Board of Directors approved the establishment of a public private partnership that would allow the District to utilize a combination of tax-deductible contributions from the community and other funds available to the District in order to acquire specialized apparatus including Fire and Rescue Boats to protect families and visitors living and recreating on the 37 miles of shoreline we serve. The North Tahoe Fire Rescue Boat Fleet will protect the shoreline from Crystal Bay to Emerald Bay – 49% of Lake Tahoe’s shoreline!

As we consider setting New Year’s Resolutions for 2019, North Tahoe Fire and Meeks Bay Fire are asking families to “Resolve to be Ready” for any emergency. Traditionally families utilize New Year’s Resolutions as an opportunity to develop healthy habits. “That is exactly what we are asking you and your loved ones to do; we are asking each member of your family to develop and practice readiness habits that will help you survive a disaster.” said NTFPD Fire Chief Michael Schwartz. “Now is the time to think through the risks in your home and community, any special accessibility considerations your loved ones may have, and then prepare, plan and practice the preparedness actions needed to give you the best chance to survive the risks that face our community. Plan how to get the information you need if power is out, cell towers are down, or there is no internet access.”

Following both the USFS TMU and CAL FIRE’s lifting of fire restrictions, which indicates the end of our local fire season, the Fire Chief has lifted local fire restrictions for North Tahoe Fire and Meeks Bay Fire Protection Districts. Those possessing current and valid residential burn permits may resume burning on permissible burn days.

North Tahoe Fire and Meeks Bay Fire urge residents to check the date on the back of their Carbon Monoxide alarms, as many units expire this year and must be replaced. Poisonings from carbon monoxide increase during cold weather as families rely on gas, oil and coal burning appliances for heat, and a working CO alarm is a life-saving device.

2018 marked the seven-year anniversary of California Senate Bill 183, known as the Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Prevention Act, which went into effect statewide on July 1, 2011. Most alarms had a seven-year sealed battery, meaning most alarms installed when the law passed are expired and due for replacement. The law requires the installation of CO alarms in all single-family homes with an attached garage or fossil fuel source.
