(Lake Tahoe, CA and NV) – A new Lake Tahoe Regional Evacuation Plan was developed by the cooperative efforts of the Lake Tahoe Fire Chiefs, Lake Tahoe Law Enforcement Agencies, and Emergency Management Personnel following experiences gained during past major wildfires. The Plan is a “living document” intended to provide the public with critical information related to evacuations and will be updated from time to time…
Carbon Monoxide Close Call – 13 People Lucky to be Alive
A Thanksgiving celebration in Lake Tahoe could have turned into a tragedy for a family of 13, had it not been for two family members that left the holiday celebration to be checked out at a local hospital where they were diagnosed with Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning. Carbon Monoxide is often referred to as the silent killer. It is undetectable to people because it is odorless and invisible.

Don’t Be Fooled by Mild Temperatures… Fire Season is Here.
A wet winter and late spring may have provided the Lake Tahoe Basin a graceful entry into wildfire season, but don’t let this week’s cooler temperatures fool you into thinking that fire season passed anyone by. It’s only just beginning as crews in North Tahoe had a record summer with everything from illegal campfires, structure fires, and even a barge fire (select the press release to see video).
Seasonal Fire Restrictions In Effect Beginning Today
On June 17, 2019 CAL FIRE suspended residential burn permits in the Tahoe Basin. Today, June 26th marked the first day of the year categorized as “High Fire Danger” in the Basin, prompting North Tahoe Fire Protection District (NTFPD) and Meeks Bay Fire Protection District (MBFPD) to impose fire restrictions by suspending all recreational campfires and open burning. The suspension takes effect today and will remain in effect through the fire season..

Destined to Burn Series… The Rest of the Story
The Sac Bee released the McClatchy Analysis to put a spotlight on policy issues to encourage conversations in the halls of the state Capitol about policy supporting defensible space and safer building standards. The series highlights areas of concern, actions to be taken, and risks to be aware of using data provided by Cal Fire. What today’s Associated Press release did not address was the rest of the conversation from our interview. The article is a call to action, using the Camp Fire as the wakeup call for California. The story failed to tell that the Tahoe Basin had our wakeup call in 2007 after the 2007 Angora Fire. It missed the opportunity to share the successes that the Basin has experienced as a result of the collaboration, policy changes, code enhancements, and other efforts that were borne of Angora’s devastation, and should serve as a road map for the rest of the state.
North Tahoe Fire Awarded a Special Grant by the California Fire Foundation to Combat Disasters in California
North Tahoe Fire is proud to announce the receipt of a generous grant from the California Fire Foundation to combat climate-change driven disasters. Through this funding, the Foundation, PG&E and first responders are working together to help communities prepare for and prevent safety hazards that can make climate-related disasters even worse.
Mountain Home Safety in the High Country
With the seemingly never-ending series of storms dumping feet upon feet of snow in Tahoe, it’s time to remind homeowners to be vigilant with their properties to ensure the safety of residents and guests. We also want to remind homeowners to take their CO alarms seriously and don’t assume it’s a battery warning, as we’ve had several legitimate Carbon Monoxide incidents due to blocked vents.
Avalanche Dangers and Snow Immersion Suffocation Hazards
Weekend storm totals brought three to six feet of new snow around the Basin, and North Tahoe Fire and Meeks Bay Fire want to warn those who are heading out to the fresh powder about avalanche dangers at all elevations, in addition to hazards of Snow Immersion Suffocation (SIS).

Are you looking for ways to help make your community safer through charitable contributions?
Are you looking for ways to help make your community safer through charitable contributions? Did you know that 100% of funds donated to the North Tahoe Fire Partnership Fund go toward marine and land-based fire and rescue apparatus dedicated to our Fire District?
Getting Started: North Tahoe Fire has raised half the funding necessary to purchase its first Fire and Rescue Boat. In 2015, the District Board of Directors approved the establishment of a public private partnership that would allow the District to utilize a combination of tax-deductible contributions from the community and other funds available to the District in order to acquire specialized apparatus including Fire and Rescue Boats to protect families and visitors living and recreating on the 37 miles of shoreline we serve. The North Tahoe Fire Rescue Boat Fleet will protect the shoreline from Crystal Bay to Emerald Bay – 49% of Lake Tahoe’s shoreline!
Chief’s Corner: In 2019, Resolve to be Ready
As we consider setting New Year’s Resolutions for 2019, North Tahoe Fire and Meeks Bay Fire are asking families to “Resolve to be Ready” for any emergency. Traditionally families utilize New Year’s Resolutions as an opportunity to develop healthy habits. “That is exactly what we are asking you and your loved ones to do; we are asking each member of your family to develop and practice readiness habits that will help you survive a disaster.” said NTFPD Fire Chief Michael Schwartz. “Now is the time to think through the risks in your home and community, any special accessibility considerations your loved ones may have, and then prepare, plan and practice the preparedness actions needed to give you the best chance to survive the risks that face our community. Plan how to get the information you need if power is out, cell towers are down, or there is no internet access.”
Burning Restrictions Lifted in North Tahoe Fire and Meeks Bay Fire Protection Districts
With the arrival of cooler temperatures, higher humidity and winter weather, effective Monday, November 26, 2018 CAL FIRE lifted the burn permit suspension that has been in place in Placer and El Dorado counties during fire season. Following both the USFS TMU and CAL FIRE’s lifting of fire restrictions, which indicates the end of our local fire season, the Fire Chief has lifted local fire restrictions for North Tahoe Fire and Meeks Bay Fire Protection Districts. Those possessing current and valid residential burn permits may resume burning on permissible burn days.
Residents are Urged to Check Carbon Monoxide Detectors
North Tahoe Fire and Meeks Bay Fire urge residents to check the date on the back of their Carbon Monoxide alarms, as many units expire this year and must be replaced. Poisonings from carbon monoxide increase during cold weather as families rely on gas, oil and coal burning appliances for heat, and a working CO alarm is a life-saving device.
2018 marked the seven-year anniversary of California Senate Bill 183, known as the Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Prevention Act, which went into effect statewide on July 1, 2011. Most alarms had a seven-year sealed battery, meaning most alarms installed when the law passed are expired and due for replacement. The law requires the installation of CO alarms in all single-family homes with an attached garage or fossil fuel source.

As Fire Prevention Week approaches, the North Tahoe Fire Protection District encourages residents to “Look. Listen. Learn.”
Today’s home fires burn faster than ever. In a typical home fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Knowing how to use that time wisely takes planning and practice. That is why North Tahoe Fire and Meeks Bay Fire are teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) ‑‑ the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week™ for more than 90 years ‑‑ to promote this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere™,” which works to educate the public about basic but essential ways to quickly and safely escape a home fire.
